NTI offers first and second year teachers professional development sessions, informational sessions, planning time, and spaces to connect with your new colleagues. Attendance at the New Teacher Institute is required for all teachers who are new to teaching.Attendance is strongly encouraged for experienced teachers who are new to OUSD or returning teachers who are entering their second year in the classroom.
Step 1: Register for the Event
Click on the purple "Register" button under ’Register to Attend’. This will take you through the initial step of registering for the event.
Use your OUSD email to register for this event if you have one. If you do not have an OUSD email yet, you can register using your personal email.
It is recommended to use the single-sign on option when registering, rather than creating a new password for the Sched website.
Step 2: Session Registration Our New Teacher Institute will offer sessions on creating strong classroom culture, learning your content and curriculum, credentialing, and more. CHECK BACK IN EARLY JUNE to build your schedule.

Crystal taught for 9 years at UPA, where they initiated the arts program and secured multiple grants to support their initiatives, before transitioning to become a Visual Arts TSA (Teacher on Special Assignment). Currently, Crystal serves as a visual arts coach at the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD), leading the design of professional development programs for secondary visual art educators. Additionally, Crystal holds the role of middle school Culture and Climate coach and facilitator with Agency by Design Oakland, focusing on fostering creativity and critical thinking through innovative educational practices.
Driven by a profound belief in the transformative power of art within cultural movements, Crystal is a dedicated advocate for pedagogical approaches rooted in culturally responsive teaching. They strive to ensure that education is inclusive and honors the diverse cultural backgrounds of students and communities they serve.
Beyond their educational roles, Crystal is also a curator and artist involved in planning exhibitions for the annual National Queer Arts Festival in the Bay Area, which center artists of the global majority and mutual aid projects.
